Mylo has created a new app design for StoryShare, a learning-driven platform that specialises in the development of employees. StoryShare is used by enterprise clients, with a majority of our clients operating in the retail, hospitality, fast moving consumer goods, manufacturing industries. They often have dispersed non-desk based workforces that are lower / hourly paid employees. In contrast to these, we have professional service clients such as law firms and top tier consultancies.
StoryShare approached Narli to help it transition from an information block led platform in the educational space to an approachable educational brand empowered by tech.
Designed to help employees learn about their workplace in a manageable task driven way, StoryShare wanted to engage with its users in a fun and energetic way. Although they have clients from Unilever to National Rail, StoryShare felt that its users needed a friendlier tone of voice and more vibrant visual identity.
Mylo's new app design for StoryShare is driven by gamification, vibrant illustrations and a simplified user experience through the use of cards and stages. Storyshare's new app design embraces both the fun of learning and rewards which come thereafter.
We started to look at StoryShare’s users and divided their needs in to four main points - Context, Motivation, Mental Modes and Pain Points
A persona is a representation of a typical user with their wants and needs. This is a great reference point throughout the design process to see if our product fits the user's primary needs.
We were able to draw up user journey maps based on existing data. We saw that users were downloading the app but bounced pretty quickly. We knew that this had to do with their initial onboarding experience and how the app’s interface failed to retain users. We decided to focus on the awards, learning journeys and implementing a leaderboard within the app.
“We want our user experience to be above our competitors and for our brand to have a unique voice. It’s all about the usability”. - Rob Dumbleton, CEO

The narli 8pt grid
It’s a great unit to work with. The numbers 4 and 8 are simply multiplied, they give consistent, yet distinct enough, steps between them. This provides a building base for spacing consistency.

During further discussions with the team at Storyshare it was evident that their customer experience was the stand out fix.
“It’s important that we stick to our semantic design framework as it gives us the liberty to scale and be efficient when implementing new features in the road ahead”. - Chris Lloyd, Founder/Head of Development
“The users need to be taken effortlessly throughout their learning modules. We want our users to want to pick up the app daily to learn something new”
“Our applications need to have a consumer feel that encourages users to engage and “forget” that it’s a work application.” - William Mitchell (Head of Product)
It was evident that their product wasn't intuitive and did not reflect its ambitions to be user friendly as well as engaging. The new design had to increase the impact, relevance and user-friendliness of the platform. There needed to be an emphasis on progress, awards and points to allow the user to feel like they have achieved whilst learning. The current design only differentiated grey and white background sections. More direct options to get to missions using cards and a decluttered home screen made for a better user experience.
It was important that the platform had the logo of the company that were using it. The employees need to be reminded that their learning was instrumental to their job as well as being vital for the company's workforce. I cut back on the point real estate and embedded it at the top right hand side. The user would be able to tap this and be taken to a more informative screen concerning their points. A 'welcome' greeting was needed to change the tone of the platform's communication with their users. This creates a more relaxed environment being less formal and gives the users a better feeling of wanting to learn. I thinned the progress bar which freed up more real estate and added a percentage notifier for the user to know how far they are with their learning.
Gamification is great because it triggers real human emotions which is why making the awards take center stage was a no brainer. The awards also needed to be differentiated with colour and look brazen but not take away from the learning environment.
I changed the misison section and gave each current mission a card which allows for easy call to action and differintiation. I also provided a time stamp so the users knew how long each mission was and be prepared for the duration. The 'Go' button on the card also call for a swift action and suggest to move forward.
The footer tabs were extended for easy navigation between the main areas of the app which included Dashboard Home, Missions, Resources and Main menu.
I also wanted there to be room for illustrations to bring more of a fun feel to the learning. It was also important to give the user an overview of the module and hints at what to expect. The levels can be seen in descending order on the left hand side along with progress bars for each level. I placed arrows on each level for prompting as this would lead the user to their missions and stages.
Nunito is a well balanced sans serif typeface superfamily, with 2 versions: The project began with Nunito, created by Vernon Adams as a rounded terminal sans serif for display typography. Jacques Le Bailly extended it to a full set of weights, and an accompanying regular non-rounded terminal version
We created a soft colour palette to enhance the learning experience, and give it a more playful feel. We used the typeface Nunito as it has soft edges and very readable on long passages.

Storyshare's new primary colour palette is cool and inviting and features their original green, purple, dark blue and yellow.

Miles was brought in to StoryShare to help us establish a new user interface and user experiences for our flagship product StoryShare Learn. It was a quick decision for us in choosing Miles as the right person for the job, he showed interest, knowledge and a deep understanding of design and best practice - which was impressive in comparison to others we had interviewed. It was a matter of days after interviewing that he joint the team and hit the ground running. Over the course of a few short weeks Miles was able to understand the product, suggest UX improvement and completely redesign the user interface to our requirements and within the technical limitation that we had. Since implementing the new UI, we’ve had consistent positive reactions and feedback that it’s clean, simple, friendly and easy to use - attributes that many of our competitors products don’t possess. Leading us to stand out in the market. I can not recommend Miles highly enough. He’s a talented designer, knowledges and a great team player. - Olly Huntsman Product Manager
