Mylo has created the brand identity for Caribbean & Kitchen; naming the concept-restaurant, and designing its visual identity, messaging system and packaging in a way that magnifies its unique Caribbean flavours inspired straight from Jamaican and Grenadian cuisines.

In conjunction with designing the identity, Gail Williams asked Mylo to help develop a name that would embody the Caribbean experience whilst reminiscing of back home in Jamaica. The name Caribbean and Kitchen recognises both origin and place of preparation of the food that is made by the establishment. Gail wanted a name that would instantly wet the appetite of hungry foodies.

I chose the serif typeface Elenor which include diagonal stress and soft curved teardrop shape terminals. It has ligatures that make it more elegant and grotesque elements that give it a modern look and make it more versatile. This typeface both impressive at display sizes and easily readable in text size, while the sharp shapes of the triangular serifs and the distinctive letter shapes show their strength in logo design and impressive editorial use.

The typefaces coincides with the vision for Caribbean and Kitchen in making it vibe with todays young culture with flairs of fun and boldness in regards to flavours. The wordmark places both words on top of each other with '&' firmly placed by 'kitchen' to highlight both words.

Gail wanted the illustrations to represent the current culture in London as well as keeping to traditional core ingredients of the Caribbean cuisine. We came up with the idea of characters holding over-large core ingredients. We stuck with the scotch bonnet and spring onions being carried by different characters. We wanted to bring in the London culture by applying the characters with quirky boots and overlarge t shirts. For the woman, we applied large earrings. We also applied a cap to the illustration of the young man. We also went with an outline style of illustration as we thought it would work better on the packaging and not be so ink heavy.

We collaborated with illustrator Nadya Kim who instantly understood the vibe and goal for the final outcomes for the illustrations.
